Folks,

God-willin' and if the creeks don't rise, I'll be at the show in Middletown, NY tomorrow. :) It's been two months since I've been to show....so yeah, I'm ready. :)

I'll check in when I can....and hopefully will return with tales to tell and pictures documenting.... :)

Hi Folks,

Well. At some point during this show, Ellis commented that this was not a normal show and I agree! :-) It was very, very fun.

This was the first time that I've been to The Mansion and it is a beautiful place and an amazing venue for acoustic music. They have a pot luck bit before the show which was really nice and there were a number of board members and other Ellis devotees there so it was a lovely time. Karen was there 8) !! and I got to meet Barb62 who I've never met before!

The setlist:

The Day the Levee Broke (on piano)
Once Upon a Summertime (on piano)
Maria's Beautiful Mess
Jukebox on My Grave
Take All the Sky You Need
Alice's Champagne Palace (Next year in Alaska!)
18
Because It's There
Million Chameleon March (Baby's First Protest Song)
God's Promise (a very soulful rendition -- gorgeous)

- Brownie Break -

Home (on piano)
She Was (!!!)
Bits from two songs still in their infancy (titles uncertain)
- Waking Up To Me (?)
- Jamiel Shaw (?)
Cotton's Burning
The Hurt (songwriting still in progress)
Calendar Man (the antidote song)
Three Thousand Miles
Dragon Fly Races
Black Top Train (unplugged in audience)
Sweet Mistakes
Minor Key
If I Could Catch the Rain (encore)

Ellis is working on ideas for a new CD, so we are going to be treated to more new songs in the coming months. :-) It is very fun to watch a song progress.

This really was a very fun show. I am hoping that others will tell more of the stories. I am good at the setlists. :-)

Can hardly wait to hear a little more about this show with my special focus right now on Ellis playing Maria's Beautiful Mess on piano. I mean I know he has some guitars for sale up on the front page right now in his latest blog spot, but still, Maria's Beautiful Mess on piano?!?!?! 8)

When Shari posted the setlist from this show and I saw that Ellis' song 18 had made it into the mix somethin told me fellow forum member IllinoisBill must have been there. In due time, I'm hoping to hear from Bill, too.

Sounds like there was mention of Alaska, too, or as Shari noted: (Next year in Alaska!) :D

Folks,

More about the show tomorrow. As Shari noted, we got to hear one verse each to two new songs. Here's what we heard:

Song One - Waking Up to Me?

It's a long cold, cold night
It's 3 in the morning and I'm driving with one taillight
On the radio - storm warnings
And I'm calling just to tell you but you will not believe
That come sunrise
When your eyes are wide open
You'll be waking up to me.

Song Two - Jamiel Shaw

Jamiel Shaw, Jamiel Shaw was the fastest kid I saw
14 yards a game per carry
Out on the streets one day;
Avoiding trouble? _________?
That's the story of Jamiel Shaw
There's a war outside the window
There's a war on TV
Take your pick
Take your pick
War - she is a temptress; she walks the streets; she is an empress
She's a whore
She's a lunatic
Mama, Mama, Mama, Mama, Mama, don't you cry
Wipe your eyes
Wars go on for centuries
Men they fight; men they leave
Wipe your eyes
Wipe your eyes

Karen!

I am amazed that you got those lyrics down..... did you have a little help? :-)

Glad you got home safely...

Paddy,

Ellis did NOT play Maria's Beautiful Mess on piano! That would be Shari making a mess of the setlist. :-) I will have to review and fix my mistake.

:-)

Shari,

Yes, I had help, but obviously not enough. ;)

BTW...."Hurricane Angel" is now "The Day the Levee Broke". Hopefully "The Hurt" will be something else too. Had there been another title clap-off, my suggestion would have been "nothing left to take." :) But I guess this ain't a democracy. ;)

Dear Shari,

I do agree, Ellis seemed SO relaxed and happy! What a great show! I was thrilled when he did "Eighteen" (love this song live) and my request, "Cottons Burning" - I love this song! The new songs sounded incredible - can't wait for the new CD. It was also nice meeting you! This was my 3rd straight year seeing Ellis at the Mansion - and again, I agree, it is a beautiful place!

Karen, hope you had a relaxing trip home and enjoyed St. Patrick's Day! It is always nice seeing you and conversing. Nice how Ellis pointed out how many shows you've attended - do you think he got the number right? How many shows do you think you've been to?

Until next time,
Barb62

Barb,

I keep a running tally, so yes, he got it right. :) or should it be  ?

Thanks for the St. Paddy's Day necklace! I didn't take it off and I asked several people if they thought I looked Irish. I mean, I could be Flynn's sister, right? :)

Thanks all for the latest from The Mansion.

Shari...sumpthin told me that was a typo.....but I couldn't resist. I was just havin some fun with it...like that's Ellis' favorite song to play on guitar and he's playing it on piano? kind of fun....like, who's he think he is? Sir Elton John?

The new song lyrics are always nice to have til the new record gets here. And I'm likin the song title change to The Day The Levee Broke.

Karen,

With the dark hair and low lightening, maybe you could pass for Flynn's sister - LOL.

I made 3 CDs for the President of Caesars Casino, where I work and so far he loves Ellis! Gave him a best of Ellis collection, a best of Flynn collection, and Dragonfly Races for his children. Who knows, Ellis could be headlining at one of the casinos in the future - that would be neat! He hasn't taken Ellis out of his stereo as of yet, so he still hasn't herard Flynn yet.

On a side note, just booked a Oct vacation to Hawaii - 10 days total - 3 days on the main island and then a 7 day cruise to the other islands. The kids are very excited - we've never been on a trip like this before!

Hope to see you soon,
Barb

Paddy,

I would love to! Could you imagine watching Ellis writing new songs on the beaches of Hawaii? He might start sounding like the Beach Boys! Our trip isn't until next October, but we have all that time to look forward to it!

Karen and all,

Somehow I missed the link to Jamiel Shaw first time around. I just read this young man's story and shed tears. Odd, all along I thought the new song with the unusual name was a song about a civil war hero. Guess there's some of that somewhere in Jamiel Shaw's story, and fate, too.

Anyway, wanted to bump this up so others could read about Jamiel Shaw in case they missed it the first time around, too.

Karen, thanks for the link to the story. Very, very sad.

Thanks for bumping this up Paddy. It is such a tragic story.
